Buying YOUR First Golf Set: What YOU should know...

Fancy being the next Tiger Woods? Or are you just planning to take up golf for recreational purposes? There are several factors you should consider before buying your first golf set. And the “thing” you used to hit the golf balls isn’t called sticks. They are called Golf Clubs. There are four main parts to a set of clubs: Woods, Irons, Wedges and a Putter.

A lot of people are taking up golf these days, whether for recreational, competitive or networking purposes.  Whichever are your reasons, the following points will be crucial in identifying and buying your first golf set.

Identify Your Golf Goals
Decide on your goals before you go shopping. Identifying realistic goals will make shopping much easier. For example, if you are taking up the game just so you can play twice a year with your brother-in-law, there's no need to spend much time, effort or money on picking out clubs. If you are wildly enthusiastic about golf and plan on playing every chance you get, then your goals are relatively higher.

Before you can determine how much you're willing to spend, and on what caliber of clubs, assess your commitment you would put aside for the game. Will you be practicing much? Are you willing to take lessons? If you answered "no" or "probably not," then, cheaper clubs might be your choice. Needless to say, if you’re willing to put in the time and energy, then investing for higher end clubs would be wise.

New Clubs vs. Used Clubs
If you're unsure of your commitment to the game, used clubs may be a good choice. They would be much cheaper than the new ones. And because it won’t cost so much, they can be easily replaced later. However, used clubs can also come with inherent problems such as worn grips, cracked shafts and others. So be sure to check!

Set Your Budget
Golf clubs can be very expensive. How much you are willing to spend depends on your commitment level. But, if you have lots of money to splash and want ‘top-of-the-line’ equipment, then go for it! A good option for many beginners, however, is looking for an inexpensive first set. That way, if you don't follow through with the game, you haven't wasted much money. My recommendation, good budget to start this off would be under RM 3000.

Understanding Shaft Options
Two basics of golf shafts that beginners should most pay attention to are shaft composition (steel or graphite) and shaft flex (how much the shaft bends during the swing). Graphite is lighter and can help generate swing speed; steel is more durable and cheaper. Women and seniors will most likely benefit from graphite shafts with a softer flex. Younger, stronger men may go with regular or stiff shafts.

The Clubs Can Make Golf Easier
There's no substitute for a good golf swing but new golfers can make it easier on themselves by choosing clubs that are geared to beginners. Choose irons that are perimeter weighted and cavity-backed. Look at "hybrid" sets, where the long irons (3, 4 and sometimes 5-irons) are replaced by utility clubs. Get a driver with more loft, not less. And please pay NO attention to what the Tour players are using! (You are NOT Tiger Woods Yet!)

Ask Around and Shop Around
Ask for recommendations and suggestions from your friends who golf. Walk into a pro shop and ask for advice. Ask your friendly neighborhood golf pro. What would they recommend for someone like you? It's a great way to get ideas. When you're finally ready to shop, make sure to shop around. Price and selection can vary from one pro shop (or department store) to another. Identify your price range and stick to clubs you can afford!

Lastly but not least, ENJOY YOUR GOLF!!
